stores are different, what do you do, everyone says going to lowe's, home depot, we know they're going to benefit, just no question, but what kind of legs or impact on the stock? i want to take you back to hurricane katrina. when that happened late august of 2005, both of these stocks were on the move up. both of them actually traded right near their all time high and in the last few years they tumbled. lowe's went to, and home depot ultimately with 21 with the cash of the market. and people who bought katrina, and long-term investment got waxed pretty good. fast forward, lowe's last time missed the street by a nickel and home depot beat by 4 cents and concensus estimates, and went up home depot, there's a downgrade recently on home depoe and two upgreats on lowe's. to me, i can lie home depot, i think they have better operators and storms and when the storm path went and i just happen to think it's a better operation, better historical execution, so i would be willing to pay extra for it, for both of the stocks. cheryl: and-- >> $30 for lowe's, 58 for home depot and break out 63 for h

and you've got to change with them or you're going to lose money. i had my plays. home depot. thriving southeastern chain, still not in the new york area. i knew it carried tools, had materials to rebuild. stanley works and black and decker. they make tools again. morgan doors, high end. pittsburgh plate glass, windows. insulation. what was i going to do? i had my list out. i was going to call my clients. i didn't have any discretion. i had to make some cold calls, urge people to buy those stocks at the opening. here's what you need to know about them. i had total faith that one, i could get those stocks within a quarter or half point from where they went out the night before. and by the way, those were the days when we traded in quarters and halves. and two, i could make a buck or two when everyone figured out what i knew or read it in the paper that the storm had caused hardware sales to surge. there was pretty much a full day's delay for almost everything. very few people watched the equivalent of cnbc back then. we didn't even have television at goldman in those days. no easy acces

. now from its command center today, home depot sending sump pumps, shop vacs anticipating lining irene a lot of coastal and inland flooding. for home depot that means demand for carpeting picks up after the storm. if there's any extra profit for the retail that comes out of this storm it comes from demand not pricing. home depot locked in prices this morning just to make sure that consumers will not get gouged. as for paying for the property, property and casualty insurers in good shape thanks to higher premiums and a lack of major events. a major storm may allow some of them to pass on higher prices to their clients. restaurants will see business decline. restaurants like this group you see here can take solace from the fact the storm is hitting did your the slow part of their week. as for the power provider the big exposure these four have in the mid-atlantic region where the heaviest rains and flooded is forecast. any earnings risk lies in prolonged outages in those areas. farther north where heavy wind can cause outages, utilities building on lessons learned from last year. more us

. at the home depot we were at, they already ran out of generators. people have been talking about the fact that several stores have already run out of water. the reason why at 7:30 tonight, that is an hour before this costco shut down the line to get into the parking lot was spilling all the way out on to the road, all the way back into the intersection. that was at 7:30, an hour before the store closed. tonight, the rush-hour crush was in the cost of parking lot. of-- costco parking lot. imagine what it looks like inside. >> it is worse. people are getting the water. the batteries are going fast. >> she managed to snag all the supplies that she could think of to keep her kids fed with or without electricity. across the area, people are hitting the stores to prepare for what could be historic wild weather. the preparation three days early was still too late. >> no generators. >> you have to work for it open to get one. >> water batteries. some had the essentials. there was the threat of days in the dark which strikes a familiar nerve with this man who is getting ready. >> we lost in july.

retailer home depot continues building its share price. it was the best percentage gainer of the dow industrials, up 2.4%, closing at an eleven- and-a-half year high. optimism surrounding the housing market has clearly helped home depot, and today's data on job creation helps optimism about housing. we saw that with several homebuilr stocks. lear jumped 6.9%, d.r. horn gained 6.2%, and pulte group rose 6%. there was a jump in mortgage applications in the past week, adding to optimism about housing. one more note related to real estate. residential mortgage servicing firm ocwen financial hit a new high all time today. ocwen will spend $750 million in cash and stock to buy a privately held mortgage servicer. ocwen shares have almost tripled in the past year as it has been buying mortgage servicing businesses, managing mortgage payments and foreclosures for lenders. oil prices were falling down even as the u.s. had some encouragg economic news. instead, weak data from europe and china pushed crude down. among the noteworthy energy stocks also lower: oil servicing firm f.m.c. technologie

hours. home depot shares keep sitting at their highest price since the spring of 2000. today's 2.4 percent rally was the best among dow jones industrial stocks. and this breakout comes on stronger than usual volume. with the home market stabilizing, home depot shares are second only to bank of america among dow stocks performance this year. h.d. is up 50 percent since january. online social network gaming company zynga is disappointing investors again, announcing a delay in launching a number of new games and lowering its earnings forecast. the stock was hit hard by the warning, falling 11.9 percent. volume exploded to more than 10 times average. this is a new low for the stock. it started trading in december at $10. it's just below two and a half time. zynga has struggled to follow up its early success with games like farmville. it said it will focus on casino- style games. the bulk of zynga's sales come through players accessing its games on facebook. and facebook shares were down 4.7 percent although volume was a little lighter than usual. as for video game retailer game stop,
